Ellwood Mesa Open Space area (which includes the Goleta Butterfly Grove) and parking lot are currently closed due to impacts from the February 2024 storm. Many trees have fallen and there is the potential for more to fall. Thank you for your cooperation. Monarch butterflies migrate each year to the Goleta Butterfly Grove to find protection from freezing temperatures and winter storms. They can usually be seen here from mid-October through February. Monarch populations have varied greatly in recent years, from almost none in 2020-2021 to over 26,000 in 2023-2024. Eucalyptus trees in the grove have suffered greatly over the last decade from beetles, extended drought and winter storms. The City of Goleta is working to enhance the butterfly habitat, protect the public, and reduce the risk of fire. The National Orphan Train Complex is a museum and research center located on the corner of Third and Washington Streets in Concordia, Kansas. The mission of the National Orphan Train Complex is to collect, preserve, interpret, and disseminate knowledge about the orphan trains, and the children and agents who rode them.
