The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is located in the former headquarters of the Eastern Townships Bank, a fine 19th century building which is part of Sherbrooke's architectural heritage. Its downtown location places the museum at the very heart of regional cultural activities. The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke has as its primary mission the promotion of the fine arts, encouraging appreciation of both their universal value and their regional flavour. To this end, the Musée is interested in works produced by the artists of the Eastern Townships, inspired by this region, or collected by its citizens. The Musée also works towards the study and collection of national and international art naïf, as well as the presentation of artistic achievements developed elsewhere. In its three galleries, the museum presents some ten exhibitions per year. The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is supported by le ministère de la Culture et des Communications, by the city of Sherbrooke, and by the generosity of its members. Established in 1982 by a group of art lovers, the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is the principal agent of conservation and promotion of the visual arts in the Eastern Townships. Accredited by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec in March 1990, since 1996 the museum has occupied an historic 19th century building, formerly the head office of the Eastern Townships Bank in downtown Sherbrooke. This completely restored building meets all the norms of museology and conservation. Over the years, the Musée has become an important factor in the conservation and diffusion of the visual arts in the Eastern Townships and is known for its dynamism, professionalism, and accessibility.
