Uwajima City Historical Museum
2-4-36 Sumiyoshi-cho, Uwajima 798-0003 Ehime Prefecture
The Uwajima Historical Museum, which was built in 1884 and became the first registered tangible cultural property in Ehime Prefecture in 1996, is a must-visit attraction. The architectural style is classified as "pseudo-Western," and skilled Japanese craftsmen at the time learned Western architectural techniques that were different from traditional Japanese architecture in order to build this structure. The construction techniques, such as corner joinery and straw binding seen in the thatched roof are evidence of the high level of architectural skill. Inside, visitors can admire numerous historic decorations rarely seen in modern times, such as the window design and balcony. In addition to the explanatory exhibition of the main building (a registered cultural property), the museum also showcases the history, people, and old maps of Uwajima. Free admission is one more reason to visit this great place.
