Established in 1986, the Maritime Museum of Townsville has a range of thematic permanent exhibitions about the Yongala shipwreck, the Port of Townsville and Townsville during the world wars. A large display of model ships illustrate the evolution of ships. Outdoor displays include the former Bay Rock lighthouse, anchors and a number of original watercraft, including the Australian Historic Vessel "Beth", a former lines boat. Temporary exhibitions illustrate various maritime themes. The Museum caters for school education activities and rents out outdoor spaces as a a venue for birthday parties, weddings and other events.
