The Living Museum of Gingerbread

The Living Museum of Gingerbreads in Torun is the first so interactive museum in Europe. It has existed since 2006 and it is located at 9 Rabianska street, in the middle of the city center. It all takes place in the Medieval Bakery under the watchful eyes of Gingerbread Master. Visitors prepare dough by themselves and bake their own gingerbreads. Another floor is a manufacturing room from the early 20th century where we teach how to decorate gingerbreads with an icing. We welcome all those who want to learn about the tradition of baking gingerbreads in Torun and its medieval culture. All of this happens in a fantastic atmosphere with a great deal of humor. The visit in our Museum is fun and joy for everyone, no matter what age you are. We welcome visitors daily 10am – 6pm. The last show starts at 5 pm. The show translated in English starts at 2 pm.

House of Nicolas Copernicus Museum

The Division of the Museum is located in two Gothic tenement houses, one of which is supposedly the birthplace of the great astronomer, Nicholas Copernicus. One can visit there burgher`s interiors (the 16th-19th cent.) and get acquainted with their mediaeval design. Visitors can find there documents and mementos connected with the life and work of the great discoverer. In the basement of the House there is an interactive exhibition "The world of Toruń gingerbread". While visiting it guided by a townswoman tourists have opportunity to both taste and bake gingerbread, find out the details of gingerbread making history, as well as get acquainted with spices used to make this speciality of Toruń.

Museum of Toruń Gingerbread The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread, a branch of the District Museum in Toruń, in the 19th c. gingerbread factory formerly owned by the Weese family, can be found at 4 Strumykowa St. It has taken three years to convert the building into a museum and prepare an exhibition space of some 1200 m2. The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread is likely to become a unique tourist attraction. Not only is it Poland's largest museum dedicated to the history of gingerbread but it is designed to be modern and interactive and solely dedicated to the long-standing European tradition of gingerbread making. Things to see and do in the museum Once you enter the former Gustav Weese gingerbread factory you are offered a tour during which you can learn many secrets about Toruń gingerbread: the ingredients necessary to prepare the dough, the baking techniques used as well as the gingerbread trade across the centuries. The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread features three exhibition floors. There are many surprises to be found here and attractions to enjoy, including a film about katarzynka (Little Kate), the most famous Toruń gingerbread biscuit, and an exhibition of early gingerbread moulds and ovens. In addition you will find an interactive recipe book, a multi-media show on the modern techniques used in Toruń-based Fabryka Cukiernicza 'Kopernik' S.A., and a 'meeting' with our own 'Gustav Weese', the former factory owner. You will also be invited to participate in a workshop giving you the hands-on experience of making your own gingerbread souvenir from dough prepared according to the original recipe, and then given a chance to taste this delicacy. The exhibition tour allows you to become familiar with a wide variety of gingerbread biscuits, a unique collection of former packagings, as well as gingerbread production techniques both past and present.
