Museum of the History of the Town of Sovetsk
Ulitsa Pobedy, 34, Sovetsk 238750 Russia
Museum of the history of the town of Sovetsk was founded on 6 April 1987 as a branch of the Kaliningrad regional history and Art Museum. On 22 August 1992 it welcomed its first visitors and from 1 March 1999 became a municipal institution of culture. The Museum Exposition reflects the highlights of the centuries-old history of the town: The foundation by the Knights of the Teutonic Order; The presentation of official city rights in 1552 by the First Duke of Prussia Albrecht of Brandenburg; The conclusion of Tilsit Peace Treaty in 1807 by the emperors of Russia and France - Napoleon I, Alexander I and the King of Prussia Frederick William III; The events of the First and Second World Wars. Part of the exposition is devoted to the famous People of Tilsit: poet-the-romance Max von Schenkendorf; writer and poet Johannes Bobrowski; Lithuanian philosopher and public figure Vilhelmas Storosta-Vydūnas; a playwright and writer of "Trip to Tilsit"- Hermann Sudermann. Post war fate of the city, which was renamed Sovetsk is reflected in the exhibition "Sovetsk. The start of Biography».
