Kawanoe Castle
Kawanoe-cho, Shikokuchuo 799-0101 Ehime Prefecture
Also known as the "Buddhist Temple Castle," Kawanoe Castle was built by the order of Lord Kono of Iyo to defend against an invasion by the Hosokawa Clan who ruled over Sanuki during the 14th century. As it was located on the border of Sanuki, Awa, and Tosa, it became a target of conflicts with neighboring domains, resulting in the loss of many soldiers' lives. Although only a few remnants remain in the stone walls near the main enclosure, the castle was reconstructed as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the former city of Kawanoe. From the main tower, you can enjoy a close view of the Houou Mountain Range, which is just a stone's throw away from Kawanoe to the east, as well as a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and its islands to the northwest. The Kawanoe Castle Suzumiyagura (two rooms) located near the main tower is available to rent and is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing during the spring.

The 360-degree view from Suiha Peak allows you to see both the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the Shikoku Mountains. One of the highlights is the cherry blossoms that were brought back from Washington, D.C. (featuring Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura, and Yaezakura varieties), which last longer than normal sakura (from April to mid-May). There are several observation decks where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of seasonal flowers. Additionally, the Kodomo Hiroba has a slide and other playground equipment, plus there is a massive, 103m Giant Twin Loop Slider at the top of the mountain that is fun for all ages.
