The Kaimei School is the oldest elementary school building in Shikoku, built in 1882 with donations from local residents. The Western-style architecture features white walls, arched windows, and corridors resembling foreign verandas, reflecting the passion of the townspeople for education and their desire to draw closer to foreign civilization. That passion has been carried on to this day, and the building was designated as National Important Cultural Property in 1997. It currently serves as an educational museum, housing approximately 6,000 items from the 19th and 20th centuries, including valuable hanging wall scrolls and old textbooks. Visitors can also experience a 19th-century style class taught by a teacher in tradtional Japanese attire, but reservations must be made at least a week in advance.

The Museum of Ehime History and Culture is one of the largest history museums in Japan. The museum stores various relics related to the history and folklore of Ehime, conducts research, and puts artifacts on display for the public to view. In the history exhibition zone, visitors can experience the sensation of traveling back in time with reproductions of buildings and streets from prehistoric, medieval, early modern, and modern eras. The folklore exhibition zone features floats and portable shrines used in festivals in Ehime, along with exhibits showing houses from the sea, mountains, and countryside regions, and the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage. In addition, visitors can also take part in historical workshops held on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and the museum frequently features special exhibitions.

Uwa Rice Museum

The Uwa Rice Museum is located in the Uwa area of Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture. The museum occupies the antique wooden building of the former Uwa Elementary School, which was built in 1928. A popular attracting here is the Floor-Wiping Races that take place along the museum's 109m-long wood floor corridor (the longest in Japan). The museum is open from 9AM to 4:30PM and it costs ¥500 to participate in a race. The race fee includes shoe rental and a certificate of participation, which makes a great memento of your trip. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. Every year, the Z-1 Grand Prix is held, where people from all over Japan come to compete for the best floor-wiping times. If you're near Seiyo in the southern part of Ehime, be sure to stop by and try your hand at wiping down Japan's longest wood-floored hallway!
