Numata Matsuri
Numata Gunma Prefecture
This festival, also called "Ogyon," originates from the Gion Matsuri of Suga Shrine and dates to the Edo period. Suga Shrine and Haruna Shrine hold events around the carrying of sacred palanquins, there is a joint palanquin show with miniature shrines from the neighboring towns, and a parade of children's shrines. These events continue for several days. There are also two large floats in the shape of demon masks, and they are carried by teams of women. That unique twist is something seen only at this festival. Luxuriously decorated floats with dolls on them, called "mando" by locals, are illuminated at night and march the streets in festive fashion. The 1,000 Man Dance is open to anyone, and the town bands together for a night of revelry and dancing.
