Nachi Ogi Matsuri (Nachi Fire Festival)
1 Nachisan Kumano Nachi Taisha, Nachikatsuura-cho, Higashimuro-gun 649-5301 Wakayama Prefecture
Katsuura in Wakayama Prefecture is the site of Kumano Nachi Shrine, which hosts a popular festival that is today held on July 14. A special stage is installed for performances of Yamato-Mai dancing and Nachi Dengaku, which is a UNESCO Intangible Heritage. The most impressive event is a fire rite where men robed in white hoist a 50kg burning torch aloft. Shouting "hariya, hariya," they carry it past the stone steps and towards the Nachi Waterfall, another World Heritage Site, and extinguish it. Twelve sacred palanquins enshrining the local Kumano deities take up the charge from there. The event is also colloquially called the "Nachi Fire Festival."
