Sounkyo Hot Spring Ice Fall Festival
Sounkyo Onsen, Kamikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun Hokkaido
First proposed and lead by Hokkaido-born sculptor Toshihiro Takenaka in 1976, the Sounkyo Hot Spring Ice Fall Festival is an ice festival held from late January through the middle of March. Ice sculptures based on themes such as naturally sculpted objects and manmade structures are spread out over the vast course of the Ishikari River, including even shrines sculpted from ice. The panoramic view from the 15-meter ice observation platform is particularly splendid, and when the sun sets, viewers are overcome by a fantastical landscape illuminated with rainbow colored lights. There are many events, including the Ice Fall drum concert and rice cake tossing, and fireworks displays light up the night sky on Saturday and Sunday.
