Tsurushi-kazari, basically meaning "dressing up dolls," is a tradition that started centuries ago, when most parents could not afford to buy dolls to celebrate their baby's first annual festival, so instead showed their affection by making them by hand. As a prayer for the child's health, they hung two plush dolls made from scraps of cloth by a red thread on either side of a hinadan (tiered doll stand). Here you can see these beautifully hand-sewn decorations that have been passed down from generation to generation.
