Snorre's sagas of the kings mention the site where Harald Fairhair is buried. In the nineteenth century it was believed the place described by Snorre had been located. This is where the national monument of the unification of Norway was erected in 1872, during the millennial celebrations of Norway's unification into one kingdom. The monument is located 2km north of the town centre.

Haugesund Town Hall

Haugesund Town Hall was a gift from shipowner Knut Knutsen OAS and his wife Elisabeth. The town hall was designed by architects Gudolf Blakstad and Hermann Munthe-Kaas and was officially opened in 1931. The park was opened in 1949. The town hall is one of the most famous buildings in the country and contains a wealth of artistic decorations. The building and its surrounding areas have been preserved. In the book Norges kunsthistorie, (The History of Norwegian Art) Leif ostby describes the town hall in connection with the classical trend among architects in the 1920s: One of the movement's most important works is Haugesund Town Hall - with its magnificent, outstandingly striking corner section embellished with double pillars.

Dokken Museum

The Dokken museum on Hasseløy takes you to the very start of the great herring era and gives us a rich insight into the everyday life in Haugesund a 150 years ago. Just across the bridge to Hasseløy (“Bakarøy”) you will find Dokken, the open air museum – a green area surrounded by a number of smaller buildings that tells the historic stories of old Haugesund. The museum represents an important part of the urban environment in Haugesund during the herring times and shows how people lived between 1850 and 1950. The first houses of Dokken were built almost 200 years ago. Back then there was a small, closed harbor for the herring boats, called a “dock”. It is from here the name “Dokken” originates. The Dokken museum is children friendly and has several activities that engage children of all ages. The grassy gardens at Dokken is a pleasant play area and a great place to take your family. In the winter months, the Dokken museum is closed, but the courtyard is open.

Regional museum (in the town centre near the church) with cultural history collections centred on agriculture, fishing, shipping, living habits and building customs. The museum centre arranges thematic exhibitions featuring domestic and local life, and archaeology. Here we can view the implements the fishermen and farmers had at their disposal. Models and photos illustrate the boats that were used for fishing and transport. Also found here is the oldest general store, a shipowner's elegant dining room and a spartan schoolroom for children of the middle classes. Opening hours: all year Monday to Friday at 10.00 -14.00
