Here you will find the ruins of the medieval cathedral and the bishop's residence from the 13th Century on the beautiful Museum grounds on the outskirts of Hamar. The museum is comprised of archaeological exhibitions, a botanical garden and an outdoor museum with about 60 buildings from around Hedemarken County. The cathedral ruins are protected by a much-discussed protective structure in glass and steel, called Hamardomen, which is an attraction in itself. The main museum is Storhamarlåven by world famous architect Sverre Fehn. Open every day in summer season. Groups all year when booked in forehand. Singing guides whom may give you the goosebumps during a musical tour. Small but cosy museum shop for gifts or sweets. Large park perfect for picknick and play, may be combined with a swim in the Lake Mjøsa.

Norwegian Railway Museum

The Norwegian Railway Museum was formed as a private initiative as early as in 1896. The main exhibition provides an insight into the social development of Norway during the 1800s and 1900s. A children’s play area with trains and other toys is also available. The exhibition is open all year round. The museum has its own spacious outdoor area comprising an open-air exhibition with old station buildings, sheds for rolling stock, historical track systems, signals and other national railway heritage buildings. Some of the buildings provides temporary exhibitions. Buildings are open from June to September. Paths in the museum park will be cleared of snow during winter. A small, narrow gauged train has operated in the museum park every summer since 1962. The line is 500 metres long and the rail gauge is 750 mm. A passenger-carrying electric garden train will run during the summer season. A restaurant carriage operates as a café during summer.
