With a collection encompassing more than 120 prints, the most well-known works by M.C. Escher (1898-1972) are always on display at Escher in The Palace. You can enjoy his early Italian landscapes, his distinctive tessellations, his impossible buildings and his world-famous metamorphoses. Escher’s development as an artist is a key focus in the museum. His early work consists of early woodcuts of people and unrivalled depictions of nature and landscapes, in which he explores his talent. In his later work he develops his revolutionary tessellations, metamorphoses and optical illusions. Eternity and infinity are ever-present in his artworks, with his many tessellations providing ample evidence of this. The two themes crop up in many forms in The Palace. The Louwman Museum is home to the world's oldest private collection of motor cars, compiled by two generations of the Louwman family. The museum dates back to 1934 and now comprises over two hundred and fifty antique and classic motor cars. Experts regard the collection as one of the most beautiful in the World. Museum Beelden aan Zee focuses exclusively on contemporary sculpture. The museum was founded in 1994 and now holds nearly one thousand sculptures and several hundreds of medals. This is the only Dutch museum which specializes in exhibiting sculpture. The collection holds work from sculptors as diverse as Armando, Stephan Balkenhol, Iris Le Rütte, Tony Cragg, Per Kirkeby, Giacomo Manzú, Kiki Smith, Igor Mitoraj, Jan Meefout , Berlinde De Bruyckere, Shinkichi Tajiri and Cornelis Zitman.

In the year 1280 AD, the gate to the outer courtyard or Buitenhof served as the main entrance to the castle of the Counts of Holland, known as the Binnenhof today. In 1428, this ‘Front Gate to the Court’ also became a prison. It was where defaulters were incarcerated and suspected criminals awaited their trials. It was a prison for four hundred years. The Prison Gate has been a museum since 1882. Ever since, it has been home to the biggest collection of instruments of punishment and torture in the Netherlands.
