Louis Sullivan Jewel Box Bank

The Merchants National Bank building is one of the eight Midwestern "jewel-box" banks designed by Louis Sullivan, legendary American architect and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright. The bank was constructed in 1914 for $60,000 and remained a bank until 1999. It now houses the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce and Grinnell Visitor Center. The interior of the bank is open for public viewing Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. Weekend hours may vary, so please call ahead prior to visiting on Saturday and/or Sunday.

a 450-acre park and nature preserve with a 7 mile trail system for hiking and cross-country skiing offering excellent viewing of a variety of native wildlife species and habitats, as well as a shelter for both summer and winter use. On the rolling terrain of the preserve are to be found prairies, savanna, woodlands, a 25 acre lake, a marsh, ponds, and wildlife plantings.
