The museum «The Chekhov Shop» is situated in the small two-storey house built in the 40s of the 19th century. It belonged to Taganrog merchant and the owner of vodka storehouse Joseph Moiseyev. The Chekhovs rented this house from 1869 to 1874. The removal to this place was connected with commercial interests of Pavel Chekhov, Anton Chekhov’s father. The father’s shop was on the ground floor, the rooms where the family lived were on the first floor. Anton Chekhov lived there from the age of 9 to the age of 14. These years left a lot of memories: long hours of sitting in the father’s shop, participation in church choir rehearsals, the first theatrical impressions and shy steps in dramatics… Sitting behind the desk, Anton Chekhov watched the shop visitors, who later became prototypes of his works. «Vanka», «Let Me Sleep», «The Thread», «Choristers», «The Head of the Family», «Difficult People» and others are traces of Anton Chekhov’s memories. The museum was opened in November, 1977.
